$4,000

This big and ornately framed oil painting was commissioned numerous years ago for a personal civil war collector who has actually since died.

The initial painting known as "There stands Jackson like a wall" was repainted by the premier civil war artist Mort Kunstler. This is an oil on canvas by artist K. Releford and is devoted to the initial and really high spec. Here is what Kunstler had to state about this piece;.

"On a hot summer season afternoon, in the very first major battle of the Civil War, "Stonewall" Jackson got his nickname.

One of my preferred characters from the war has actually been General Thomas J. Jackson and I decided this would be a terrific moment to paint.

I went to the Manassas battlefield to see exactly what ideas I might create to mention to the story as properly and directly as possible. When I saw the ache woods down the slope from the Henry House, where Jackson and his men had formed their line, I instantly felt that it would make a perfect background for the photo. It provided me the opportunity to do a painting unlike any I had actually done in the past.

Jackson, naturally, is the center of interest. He is worn his old blue V.M.I. uniform and forage cap and looking attentively to the crest of the Henry House hillside in the west, waiting to catch his first blush of the Union soldiers.

The flag is the First National flag and it is simple to see why there was a lot confusion during the early stages of the war since of its similarity to the U.S. flag. Contributed to this, were the blue uniforms of many of the Confederate officers from the "old" army. This, naturally, would alter with time.

Behind Jackson is his gray line of Virginia infantry, numerous in the early frock coat of the Virginia militia, that was later on abandoned. The headgear was mainly the kepi and forage cap, that would likewise offer means with time, to the much even more popular "slouch" hat. The guys were equipped with the Model 1842 musket, and with bayonets repaired, need to have been an amazing sight. It was truly the calm before the storm. ".
